Everton outclassed Newcastle United 1-0 on the final day of the season.
The Magpies were desperate to seal the three crucial points to guarantee their place in the Champions League next season.
But Everton stunned the St James’ Park crowd by producing an excellent away performance. They came away with a brilliant victory after a 65th-minute goal from Carlos Alcaraz.
In the end, the result did not matter for Eddie Howe’s team as Aston Villa’s loss at Manchester United meant they finished fifth in the table.
Season Review
Everton made a dreadful start to the season, losing their opening four league matches. The Toffees showed some improvement over the following months under Sean Dyche, but the club’s hierarchy decided to part company with the English boss in January.
David Moyes, who lost his job at West Ham United last summer, was brought in as the replacement at Goodison Park. The Scot’s first stint in Merseyside was greatly successful, but things were expected to be difficult for him in his second spell.
However, Moyes made a positive impact on the team, leading them to an impressive nine-game unbeaten run in the English top-flight. That eased the relegation fears, as they created a significant gap with the drop zone.
But with nothing riding on their season, Moyes’ men endured a disappointing run, winning just one of their five matches in April.
However, the Merseyside outfit ended their season on a high as they won their final three fixtures against Fulham, Southampton and Newcastle.
Hopes of winning silverware ended early for the Toffees as they went out of the Carabao Cup in the third round following a penalty shootout loss to Southampton. Their FA Cup journey lasted until the fourth round when they lost 2-0 to Bournemouth.
