Everton in three-way battle for Ajax ace Chuba Akpom

Everton are keen to bolster their attacking ranks in the closing stages of the January transfer window and have set their sights on Ajax ace Chuba Akpom.

According to journalist Ryan Taylor, a loan move for the Englishman would be more realistic than a permanent deal at this late stage of the winter market.

Everton find themselves in financial turmoil after being charged with a second breach of the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

However, they are hoping to add more firepower to the forward line by securing a late loan deal for the versatile 28-year-old attacker before the February 1 deadline.

The relegation strugglers are not alone in their quest to secure Akpom’s signature and could be rivalled by Crystal Palace and Premier League newcomers Luton Town.

Akpom was previously linked with a move to the Premier League after a stellar spell in the Championship with Middlesbrough but ended up securing a move to Ajax.

However, his time in Amsterdam hasn’t gone according to script, and despite netting nine times in 20 games across all competitions, a mid-season departure could be on the cards.

Everton could struggle in their plan to lure Akpom to Goodison Park on a temporary deal, considering Ajax have already rejected a loan bid from French club Lille.

But it remains to be seen if they can conjure up an irresistible offer that would tempt the Dutch powerhouse to reconsider their stance on a temporary switch.

Everton are knee-deep in yet another relegation scrap this season after being docked ten points for breaching PSR rules and will need every help they can get to avoid dropping to the Championship.

The recent goalless draw against Fulham saw Dyche’s side drop into the bottom three, but they remain one point away from safety, although 17th-placed Luton have a game in hand.
