Liverpool vs Everton: Merseyside giants set for blockbuster clash at Anfield

The latest clash between Liverpool and Everton at Anfield on Saturday will have a different dynamic than recent Merseyside derby encounters.

The Toffees’ fortunes have improved since the Friedkin Group’s takeover, with the squad now looking much deeper after the summer transfer window.

Everton head into the game sixth in the Premier League table after collecting seven points from their first four matches this season.

While Liverpool have an unblemished record at the top of the standings, you would be hard pressed to argue they have been convincing up to this point.

Recent history in the derby does not paint a pretty picture for Everton, and they will be desperate to give Liverpool a run for their money this weekend.

With that in mind, read on as look at the recent results between the two teams, before assessing whether Everton can secure a positive result at Anfield.

Liverpool vs Everton – Preview

Liverpool have lost just one of their last 28 home games against Everton in all competitions (W17, D10), and have won four in a row since a 2-0 defeat in February 2021.

However, Everton have undoubtedly improved their away form under manager David Moyes, winning six and drawing two of their last 11 league games.

Intriguingly, Moyes has never won a Premier League match at Anfield in 20 attempts (D6, L14), the joint most any manager has recorded at one stadium without winning.

Despite this, while it would be foolish to underestimate Liverpool, the Toffees will head to Anfield with genuine hopes of taking something from the game.

Defender James Tarkowski believes Everton are capable of making life difficult for the home side and says Moyes has got them heading in the right direction.

“As a group, the manager set his stall out,” Tarkowski said. “He wants us right at the top half of the table and pushing up there.

“He showed us what we need to do to do that, the number of goals we need, the number of points we need. Now it’s up to us to go out there and do it over the season.

“It’s been a good start to the season and progress is being made, for sure. I think against Villa was the best we’ve played, to be honest, without winning, so now we have to move forward again.”

While the goalless draw against Villa at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last Saturday was a frustrating result, Moyes’ side outplayed the visitors.

The Toffees had 20 shots during the game, but a combination of wasteful finishing and a solid performance by goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez scuppered their chances of winning.

Moyes will recognise that Everton will need to take any opportunities they create at Anfield given they are likely to spend most of the game on the back foot.

Liverpool have been far from their best this season, but have still ground out four victories without truly clicking into gear.

They were fortunate to beat Burnley at Turf Moor last weekend, with Mohamed Salah’s late penalty proving to be the difference between the two sides.

Liverpool’s involvement in the Champions League could work in Everton’s favour. The Reds host Atletico Madrid on Wednesday and fatigue could play a part in the derby.

Recent results between the two sides suggest this should be a banker home win, but Everton have made significant strides under Moyes.

A positive result this weekend would be another step in the right direction and have the fans dreaming about potential European qualification.
