Everton have announced they will pay tribute to their greatest ever team on Saturday.
The Toffees have officially designated Saturday’s fixture with eight-time Premier League winners Manchester City at Goodison Park as ’84/85 Day’.
The club have chosen the closest home matchday to coinincide with the 40-year anniversary of Goodison Park’s greatest night, when they triumphed 3-1 over Bayern Munich in the European Cup Winners Cup semi-final second leg.
Everton went on to lift the European trophy that season, beating Rapid Vienna in the final in Netherlands. They also won the First Division title in 1984-85, and reached the FA Cup final where they lost to Manchester United.
That campaign remains the most successful in the club’s history, and on Saturday, they will pay tribute to the late Howard Kendall and the players he led at that time with various events before and during the match against City.
The club have invited a number of legendary players from the 1984-85 squad and they will be welcomed onto the pitch at half-time to receive the fans’ acclaim.
There will also be special guests in attendance to discuss how the Blues helped shape the direction of English football in the 80s.
Meanwhile, the 1878s supporters’ group will unveil a flag and banner display on the Gwladys Street to pay homage to some of the key players from that era.
Everton have been completely transformed since David Moyes returned to the club in January. Under the Scottish boss, they have registered five wins and six draws from 14 matches, with their latest success coming at Nottingham Forest last weekend.
The Merseysiders snatched a stunning win against Champions League-chasing Forest after Abdoulaye Doucoure netted a dramatic 94th-minute winner.
Given their impressive form, Moyes’ side will fancy their chances against City who are also coming off a 5-2 victory against Crystal Palace.
